Animate Together: MotionPhone App is a new Form of Visual Communication
148Apps.biz 27 Jan 2012, 7:00 am CET
San Francisco, California – MotionPhone, a new app for the iPad, enables a unique form of visual communication, allowing people to create animations together over the Internet. The app, created by Scott Snibbe Studio, is the company’s first release since producing Bjork’s groundbreaking Biophilia App Album last year, and is a similarly innovative combination of interactive visuals with music.
In MotionPhone, fingers’ movements become colorful dancing abstract shapes whose personality comes directly from the way one moves. “Each person moves differently and naturally creates their own original style of animation.” said Scott Snibbe, the app’s creator, “Each of our movements are as original and recognizable as our face or the way we walk, and with MotionPhone, it’s the first time we get to see these traces of movement.”
As its name suggests, MotionPhone is more than an animation program. Using Apple’s Game Center Technology, the app lets people connect to one another remotely so that two, three, or four people can have a ‘visual conversation,’ creating animation together on an infinite two-dimensional plane. The resulting collaborative animations, reminiscent of 1980s animated music videos, or experimental films from the 1930s, can be cacophonous or sublime. Snibbe calls the process ‘Visual Music’ and with the networking component, ‘Visual Jamming.”
The app was originally an interactive artwork that Snibbe says evolved from his days in college studying animation and computer science. Working late in research labs while listening to classic jazz albums like Mingus Ah Um, he created a networked animation program that allows people to improvise animation in the same way that jazz artists improvise music.
The program eventually found the attention of art curators in the 1990s, winning a Prix Ars Electronica prize – sometimes referred to as the ‘Academy Awards’ of interactive art. However, Snibbe always wanted MotionPhone to be distributed widely, at a low cost, so that the program could be enjoyed by everyone. As Snibbe notes, “Now apps like Motion Phone can be sold for the cost of a video rental, instead of the price of a car.”
MotionPhone takes the same social gaming technology that lets you play Doodle Jump with your friends – Apple’s Game Center – and uses the system for collaborative play and communication, much like parlor games of the 19th century. Snibbe believes MotionPhone, despite being almost twenty years old, is the first commercially available networked animation program.
Device Requirements: * Compatible with iPad * Requires iOS 4.0 or later * 1.7 MB
Pricing and Availability: MotionPhone HD 1.1 is $4.99 USD (or equivalent amount in other currencies) and available worldwide exclusively through the App Store in the Entertainment category.

Nosy Crow’s Cinderella App Wins Publishing Innovation Award
148Apps.biz 26 Jan 2012, 4:00 pm CET
New York and London – Independent children’s app publisher Nosy Crow is pleased to announce that its Cinderella app for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch has won the Publishing Innovation Award for Best Juvenile App.
The Publishing Innovation Awards recognize excellent publishers and authors, encourage new thinking, and improve the reading experience in the digital age. The awards were created by Digital Book World, organizers of the Digital Book World Conference and Expo, in response to a need for best-in-class designations.
“The Cinderella story isn’t new, but Nosy Crow’s developers use the app platform in new ways to make this an entertaining experience with extremely high play value and a long engagement time,” said the Publishing Innovation Awards judges of the Juvenile App category. “Clever design decisions, excellent navigation, and enhanced content allow young readers to play in a very natural way with the story. Readers can stay on a page as long as they like and will be rewarded for every tap, tip, or swipe.
The judges praised Nosy Crow’s Cinderella for its use of characters that are voiced by children. Nosy Crow was also commended for capturing the way real children pretend-play as exemplified during scenes in which the Prince and Cinderella dance Bollywood-style at the Ball and play ping-pong happily ever after once they are married.
“Children are spending more and more time on screens and it’s important for us as publishers to encourage children’s literacy and engagement with reading by creating reading experiences that are at least as much fun as anything else they do on screens,” says Kate Wilson, Managing Director of Nosy Crow. “At Nosy Crow, we’re creating a new kind of compelling reading experience that is interactive and multimedia, not just a book squashed onto a phone. It is an honor to have our achievements recognized by the Publishing Innovation Awards.”
The judges for this year’s Publishing Innovation Awards are acknowledged experts in ebooks, enhanced ebooks, and book apps. Their assessment criteria for the awards were Innovation, Design, Usability, Content and Consistency. Competing in the same category as Cinderella were shortlisted apps by HarperCollins (When I Grow Up), Disney (Don’t Let the Pigeon Run this App!), Sesame Workshop (The Monster at the End of this Book) and Megapops (Millie and the Lost Key).

AssistiveWare announces Proloquo2Go App Donation Program
148Apps.biz 26 Jan 2012, 3:55 pm CET
Amsterdam, Netherlands – Today AssistiveWare announced the Proloquo2Go App Donation Program, for which it has partnered with Easter Seals DuPage and the Fox Valley Region (Villa Park, Illinois, US). Easter Seals DuPage and the Fox Valley Region, a well-known 501(c)(3) non-profit, has a long history of helping people with speech impairments and is internationally known for its expertise in the field of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). AssistiveWare recognizes that not everyone can afford its wildly popular Proloquo2Go communication app for iOS, and therefore the Proloquo2Go app donation program is intended to help those with limited funds get access to this powerful software.
“We wanted to give back to the community but focus on those most in need,” said David Niemeijer, AssistiveWare’s founder and CEO. “Rather than giving away licenses through online giveaways, we wanted to ensure that we would reach those people for whom Proloquo2Go had been identified as the right solution but who do not have the funds to purchase it. With Easter Seals DuPage and the Fox Valley Region we feel we have found the perfect partner to achieve this goal.”
Together, AssistiveWare and Easter Seals DuPage and the Fox Valley Region worked for several months on the Proloquo2Go App Donation Program to make sure it would have all the right checks and balances in place. To be eligible for the donation program an Augmentative Communication Evaluation by a licensed Speech Language Pathologist must be included with the submission of each application. An application will first be reviewed by the financial office of the Easter Seals DuPage and the Fox Valley Region center for compliance with the financial need requirements of the donation program. If the application meets these requirements, it will be reviewed by an AAC reviewing from team of the Center. Among other things, an AAC specialist will then evaluate whether or not Proloquo2Go meets the needs of the client.
“Easter Seals is very excited to partner with AssistiveWare to help distribute Proloquo2Go to individuals who need this support for communication,” shares Kathleen Post, Assistive Technology Department Manager at Easter Seals DuPage and the Fox Valley Region. “This partnership provides a way that individuals with significant financial and communication need are able to obtain and utilize this powerful app.”
With this donation program AssistiveWare and Easter Seals DuPage and the Fox Valley Region hope to help many individuals and families. AssistiveWare believes Proloquo2Go can make a difference to many individuals with speech impairments, but as it may not always be the most appropriate solution it is important to partner with organizations such as Easter Seals DuPage and the Fox Valley Region.
The donation program is open to anyone in the USA.

PegLight 2 – Create awesome peg drawings on iPhone and iPad
148Apps.biz 26 Jan 2012, 2:30 pm CET
Medford, Massachusetts – Knert Software today is pleased to announce PegLight 2 for iOS, a major update to their peg art Entertainment app for kids. Featuring multi-touch drawing, four different colors, and variable zoom, PegLight 1 was cited as “New & Noteworthy” and achieved 500,000 downloads. PegLight 2 adds a shape selection tool, an improved GUI, and a PegLight Community for sharing peg drawings with other users. Also included are 20 different colors, square pegs, star pegs, and triangle pegs. These new pegs imaginative add a never before seen dimension to peg art, multiplying the possibilities of color and texture enormously. Similar to well-known toys, PegLight’s giant pixels let kids create imaginative drawings.
At launch in landscape orientation, PegLight 2 displays a blank canvas, a large grid of dark gray dots on a black background. In the lower left of the tab bar are five dots from which to choose: black, red, yellow, green, or blue. Touching any color selects it, and young artists can “insert” color pegs into any “hole” in the grid. Pegs can be put in one at a time by touching any dot, whether empty or already filled. Dragging across the screen creates a line of colored pegs.
And dragging slowly with two fingers creates two lines. In fact, kids can draw together or use as many of their own fingers as they like. New in this version is the shape selection tool. In addition to the Normal mode, where pegs are applied individually, a Square tool lets the user drag the outline of a square or rectangle, which is automatically filled in with pegs. The Ellipse tool lets the user drag a white outline of a circle or ellipse, which is immediately filled in when the artist lifts their finger from the screen.
The continuously variable 3x zoom makes it easy to create detailed drawings, as each dot becomes as large as or larger than a fingertip. With single pixel accuracy, artists can experiment with line and color, and use black pegs to simulate holes. A very useful new feature is that touching any dot creates a peg that is twice its normal size, which quickly shrinks down to normal. In this way, the color and shape of the peg is never hidden by the artist’s finger. In addition, the touch interface has been improved so that kids can drag their finger continuously to create smooth, unbroken, complex lines and fills.
Most exciting about this latest update is the creation of a PegLight Community for sharing peg drawings with other users. From within the app, users can browse drawings that have been uploaded by others, and they can download any drawing into the app with one touch. Once opened in the app, kids can use a downloaded drawing as a template to create their own rendering of the picture. Artists can also save their own work for uploading to the Community, for display, or to continue working on later. The PegLight Community page mimics the iTunes store, with icons for Featured, Top Rated, Top Downloads, and My Uploads.
Feature Highlights: * Completely revamped UI * New peg styles (stars, triangles and squares) * New selection tool (Normal, Square, Ellipse) * PegLight Community for sharing peg drawings with other PegLight 2 users * Universal app that works on iPad and iPhone * Improved interface from the original PegLight * Many more features planned in the next two months
“PegLight drawings, by virtue of the medium itself, are always expressive and interesting,” commented Michael Marceau of Knert Software. “Even the youngest kids will be proud of their PegLight creations.”
Device Requirements: * iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch * Requires iOS 5.0 or later * Universal app optimized for display on all iOS devices * 4.9 MB
Pricing and Availability: PegLight 2 is $1.99(USD) and comes complete with four new peg packs, new colors, a community for sharing your peg art with others. PegLight 2 and available worldwide exclusively through the App Store in the Games category.

Control the Universe in New StarXStar Astrological Card Game for iPhone
148Apps.biz 26 Jan 2012, 2:30 pm CET
Hong Kong – Designed to bring out the inner astrologer in anyone, the new iPhone app StarXStar is introduced today as a challenging outer space card game where players must use their skills with numbers and patterns to win over their opponent.
Players of the StarXStar game use star patterns and smart thinking to control the galaxy. Competing against their iPhone or a friend, users play cards representing different constellations. Each card contains a number on each of its four sides. To control an opponent’s StarXStar, players must put a stronger card next to theirs.
As players try to use their strongest cards to gain the upper hand, their opponent is doing the same, making for a quickly changing game. The goal is for players to control more StarXStar than their opponent at the end of each game, when all nine boxes are filled.
“In StarXStar, you fight against some brilliant and terrific astrologers,” said Steve Ma, creator of the app. “You will need to use all of your skills, talents, and even luck to win.”
The StarXStar game features a variety of modes to choose from: Crash to start playing, Base to select or construct a galaxy, and Link to play against a friend using Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Players can also choose from up to 20 favorite StarXStar from their entire collection to form new combinations and claim victory over their opponent.
For more experienced players, StarXStar offers two advanced options. Expert Mode includes Rotator cards that can be turned and Inheritor cards that can be placed over an existing StarXStar to strengthen its power. Rainbow Mode groups the StarXStar by color, with different features based on their color.
“Once you learn the basics, try Expert Mode and Rainbow Mode to get stronger StarXStar and strengthen your galaxy,” said Steve Ma. “With enough practice, you can become one of the best astrologers in the universe.”
Features of the StarXStar game include:
* Various Skill Levels – Players can choose from four different levels (Meteors, Gravity, Rainbow and Twins) to train and test their skills.
* Flexible Game Play – StarXStar is designed to allow players to start playing quickly, and challenges more experienced players with a variety of advanced options.
* Control the Universe – The game can be customized to be easier or more challenging by setting the card level for each player and choosing how many rounds are needed to win.
* Build a Custom Galaxy – By unlocking different patterns, players can construct their own galaxy based on available StarXStar in their astronomical arsenal.
* Battle Other Astrologers – The game lets players play against other astrologers over a Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connection.

Fragmented HD 1.0 for iPad – The Easiest Way To Share Your Photos
148Apps.biz 26 Jan 2012, 2:05 pm CET
Reading, United Kingdom – Velvet Rock Apps today is pleased to introduce Fragmented HD 1.0 for iPad, their mosaic photo frame that can be shared on Facebook, Twitter and Flickr. The frame holds 15 photographs from the users photo library and includes a variety of options allowing the user to choose how they would like their frame to look. Once completed the mosaic frame can be shared on Facebook, Twitter, Flickr or via email.
The frame is made up of 15 separate areas, by double tapping on an area the users photo library appears allowing the user to add an image. The image can then be enlarged if necessary by using the pinch zoom gesture and dragged around until the user is happy with the look. Double tapping the top of the frame brings up the ‘Options Menu’ allowing the user to change the frame colour, the background colour, add a plaque, create a blank frame, convert photos to black and white, save the frame to their photo album, show a tutorial, email a finished frame or share a frame on Facebook, Twitter or Flickr.
“They say a picture is worth a 1000 words… we say a selection tells an entire story” is the strapline for Fragmented HD and once the frame is full of photos the quote is perfectly apt. There are many photography apps available for iOS devices, but it is the concept and execution that makes Fragmented HD a standout. Fragmented HD makes it incredibly easy to create your own frame and share with Facebook, Twitter or Flickr. The ease of use and attention to detail is clear to see and the company (Velvet Rock Apps) have even gone as far as creating a group on Flickr so users can post their favourite frames for all to see.
Fragmented HD 1.0 is a very personal affair, the fact that there are a variety of options and the user chooses the images from his/her photo library, no two frames will ever be the same, Fragmented HD allows infinite possibilities.
Feature Highlights: * 15 photos in a single frame * Convert photos to black and white at the touch of a button * A variety of frame colours to choose from * Infinite possibilities with users photos * Share frame instantly via email, Facebook, Twitter or Flickr * One single email attachment, 15 photographs
“Fragmented HD for iPad is the perfect way to share special occasions with not only friends and family but the entire world.” commented company founder, Chris Yates. “Imagine a friend or loved one’s face if they received a Fragmented frame in their email inbox of your latest holiday trip or their granddaughters recent birthday party.”

tappr.tv v5 adds Symmetry and Audio Input for gorgeous music visuals
148Apps.biz 26 Jan 2012, 2:00 pm CET
San Francisco, California – At Macworld/iWorld 2012, aspiring iArtist deeje is pleased to announce version 5 of tappr.tv, featuring Symmetry Modes and Audio Input, for even more stunning music visuals. Unlike traditional algorithmic music visualizers, tappr.tv lets users tap, swipe, tilt, and buzz to dynamically create kinetic, multi-layered visual “dances” to their favorite songs, and publish those dances for other fans to watch and enjoy.
The heart of tappr.tv is the “wand”, which responds to the user’s physical and audible input with bursts of particles and light. There are hundreds of wands available, each personally curated by deeje for their unique and beautiful kinetic qualities.
In the Studio section of the app, users can record their wand motions into multiple tracks to create a visual “dance” to a favorite song. When done, users can publish their dances to tappr.tv. In the Theater section, fans of that music will be notified so they can download, watch, rate, and share those visuals.
New in version 5 is Symmetry Mode, which the user can set on a track-by-track basis. Symmetry replicates the selected wand output around the screen based on the user’s input; modes include Vertical, Horizontal, and 2x thru 7x.
Also new in version 5 is Audio Input, which allows users to hum, buzz, and sing to generate wand input. Not only does Audio Input map pitch to position on the screen, it also maps volume to scale, for yet another dimension of visualization. Combining Symmetry modes with Audio Input creates truly gorgeous visual layers to a user’s dances.
tappr.tv is a free universal app for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch. Premium features and themed wand packs are available for in-app purchase. Video Out is also available, via compatible cables or AirPlay on supported devices.
deeje will be showing tappr.tv in the Mobile App Showcase on the Expo floor from Thursday, Jan 26th thru Saturday, Jan 28th.

Education With iOS: Apps to Reinvent Your Science Classroom
148Apps.biz 26 Jan 2012, 1:25 pm CET
Alexandria, Virginia – Vito Technology, an awarded developer of top education iOS apps is proud to announce that its bestsellers Star Walk (stargazing guide), Solar Walk (3D Solar System model) and Geo Walk (new kind of encyclopedia) have been successfully used during classes by educators around the world. Vito Technology is delighted to share first hand testimonials from happy educators who have implemented their technology to life.
Educators claim that using Solar Walk has proved to change classroom atmosphere to engage students and make complicated material more available:
“I used this app recently when teaching Year 9 BTEC students about the composition of the Solar System and the some what unbelievable sizes of planets and our galaxy. Students were engaged from the start as I had chosen to project the animation of the solar system rotating slowly on the board as the pupils arrived. A darkened room and the music playing set the scene for the lesson and I was pleased and amazed by the engagement of the students throughout the lessons as this app made the lesson more accessible to all students. Students where required to research all of the different planets in the solar system and produce a scale drawing of the solar system by the end of the lesson.” by Smartlearning Teacher of Science at Priority Community School Weston Super Mare.
“Solar Walk gives your students a realistic look at the Solar System. The time machine feature is excellent and will help students visualize the changes in the Solar System over time. Let your students take a virtual field trip to the planet of their choice to explore and report back to the class about. Students can become astronauts and take a virtual “rocket” ride, flying to the planet of choice, getting an in-depth look at the planet, and exploring each of the planets moons.” by iPad Curriculum.
“Even though my students watched Solar Walk on a small screen, they felt like they experienced the solar system as they had read in Lucy and Stephen Hawking’s book “George’s Secret Key to the Universe” (yep, he wrote a kids novel). In that book a powerful computer can open a portal to show young George the planets. That is precisely what my classroom of children will pretend if we can manipulate Solar Walk on our large interactive screen!” Greg Kroening, Burroughs Community School
Star Walk in Education: “Students at Hawaii Preparatory Academy are among the many who are working with Star Walk. Seeing and learning about the night sky and the star systems in a highly interactive way creates immediate learning to many in a way that has never been possible. Through the time machine and search function, students can discover constellations in a way that was never possible before. Interactive education is a great way for students to learn, and this app delivers a truly interactive star system. Many educators are now introducing apps such as Star Walk into the classroom to enhance the education experience, and to keep students engaged and interested.” Dave V, TopEducationalApps.
The developers will visit iWorld Macworld to showcase updated apps.
Pricing and Availability: Star Walk – 5 Stars Astronomy Guide 5.6 is $2.99 (USD) and available worldwide through the App Store in the Education category. Star Walk for iPad – Interactive Astronomy Guide 5.5 is $4.99. Solar Walk and Geo Walk are $2.99.

SimpleSort Counting: A Preschool app that teaches early math skills
148Apps.biz 26 Jan 2012, 1:05 pm CET
Lexington, Massachusetts – KidsAndBeyond today presents the first offshoot of the much acclaimed SimpleSort, SimpleSort:Counting. This app focuses on early math skills such as: counting, sorting, ordering, and comparing numbers for children that are at the preschool level.
Each screen has a different game. The options to hear the number as you count and see the number reinforces the skill of counting out loud and getting familiar with the written number. By placing numbers on a number line from 1-10, children get a visual sense of number placement and order. Counting objects and seeing sets of objects teaches kids to compare two numbers by visually assessing which group has more or less. Addition is introduced very subtly again by visually combing two groups and counting the objects in each group to get a sum less than 10.
SimpleSort: Counting includes * A helper cloud and narrator to guide the child through the app * A text-based help screen for parents to read * Choice of numbered buckets from 1-10 with an option to play the game with 3,4,5, or 6 buckets * 3 different game options, including “Count, Sort, and Place in Order,” “Count and Add” and “Count and Compare” * Option to play all three games consecutively or one at a time * Voiceover narration that names each number as child touches corresponding objects
Minimum Requirements: * Compatible with iPad * Requires iOS 3.2 or later * 19 MB
Pricing and Availability: SimpleSort:Counting 1.0 is $0.99 USD (or equivalent amount in other currencies) and available worldwide exclusively through the App Store in the Education category.

iOS strategy racing game Dash Race 3.5 out now with lots of new features
148Apps.biz 26 Jan 2012, 1:00 pm CET
Rauenberg, Germany – Indie developer Rombos today updated its popular strategy racing game Dash Race to version 3.5 with lots of new features and improvements, especially considering the much appreciated feedback of the constantly growing user base.
Besides a new control schema that makes it very easy to complete your move, Dash Race 3.5 comes with a new optional background grid consisting of triangles instead of squares. Choosing this will require a completely different strategy to drive optimal curves and avoid obstacles. For an additional thrill, you can choose to make the grid invisible and so additionally challenge experienced drivers.
The exciting online multiplayer race via Game Center was extended by a text chat feature that allows players to communicate even if voice chat is unavailable or unwanted at the moment. And if a player is unintentionally disconnected during a game, it is now easy to continue the race where you left off once all players are available again.
Other improvements include more intelligent robots, better overall Game Center handling, a revised scoring system to better account for driving excellence, and the option of listening to your own iPod music during a race.
This big update is rounded off with a new free “go-where-you-like” space-theme track, plus various new achievements, especially the much asked for puzzle-type quests for completing tracks with a given minimal number of moves.
About the Game: In Dash Race, up to 4 players make their moves in turn, following a very simple set of rules based on a classic and popular paper and pencil game; Dash Race takes this entertaining concept to a whole new level, and excels in creating a competitive challenge with amazing realistic driving behavior allowing you to take curves at crazy speeds, requiring courage, experience and dexterity!
Multiplayer racing is supported locally via Bluetooth and WiFi, and of course worldwide via Game Center. A lot of achievements and various leaderboards complete Dash Race’s comprehensive features for a global competition with your friends and other Dash Race fans.
Device Requirements: * iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad * Requires iOS 3.1 or later (Game Center support starting from iOS 4.1) * Universal Application * 27.2 MB
